Short answer

As a 2026 planning estimate, new sewer pipe work on an open lot typically quotes $600 to $1,000 per metre when shallow and $1,000 to $2,000 per metre when deep or under hard surfaces. On top come cleanouts ($600 to $2,500), permits ($150 to $2,000+), the municipal connection ($0 to $15,000+) and restoration ($500 to $15,000+). Replacing an existing 15 to 25 m lateral by open cut typically quotes $12,000 to $35,000.

Key takeaways
  • Excavation and restoration, not pipe, drive the price; pipe and fittings are roughly $30 to $120 per metre of material.
  • Depth changes the rate: deep trenches need shoring, larger machines and more backfill.
  • The municipal connection is the widest range, from a simple stub to a road cut with traffic control.
  • Ranges match the published cost pages of sister sites SewerQuotes.com and SewerReplacement.ca.

Building sewer long section showing slope and fallThe building drain leaves the foundation wall and becomes the building sewer. A cleanout riser sits just outside the wall. The pipe falls at a steady slope to the municipal connection. The fall is the run length multiplied by the slope: 10 mm per metre at 1 in 100 and 20 mm per metre at 1 in 50. A laser or string line set parallel to the pipe keeps the grade. 01 /What does a new sewer line cost to install?

It depends on which job you mean, and the three jobs are priced differently. Servicing a new or infill house on an open lot is the cheapest per metre, because there is no old pipe and usually good machine access. Replacing a failed lateral under an established yard costs more, because the surface has to be rebuilt. Adding a branch for a suite or addition sits between, priced by its length, depth and what it crosses.

Sewer installation scenarios, typical quoted ranges, CAD planning estimate (2026)
ScenarioPrivate-side pipe workAlso budget for
New service, new or infill house, open lot$600–$1,000 per metre shallow; $1,000–$2,000 per metre deepMunicipal connection, capping the old service, permits

Cleanout added$600–$2,500Slab or paving repair if interior or under hard surfaces
Backwater valve in new construction$800–$2,500Access box, permit

02 /What line items make up an installation quote?

A sewer installation quote is a stack of separate costs. The original SewerInstall.com said it would not publish flat-rate prices and would list scope, method, depth, materials, permit fees, disposal and restoration line by line instead. That is the right way to read any quote, and the table below gives a planning range for each line.

Installation line items, typical quoted ranges, CAD planning estimate (2026)
Line itemTypical rangeWhat it covers
Pre-work camera and locate$250–$600Video of any existing line; route and depth marked
Mobilisation and utility locates$500–$2,000Equipment delivery, locate coordination, site setup
Layout$0–$500Confirming the connection point and invert from records
Trench and pipe, shallow$600–$1,000 per metreExcavation, bedding, PVC pipe at code slope, backfill
Trench and pipe, deep or under hard surfaces$1,000–$2,000 per metreShoring, larger equipment, more backfill and compaction
Pipe and fittings (material only)$30–$120 per metreUsually inside the per-metre rate
Cleanout$600–$2,500Interior or exterior access for future cleaning
Municipal connection$0 to $15,000+Tie-in at the property line or main; road or boulevard work
Permits and inspections$150–$2,000+Plumbing, right-of-way and connection permits
Restoration$500–$15,000+Topsoil and seed up to concrete, asphalt and landscaping
Post-work camera video$0–$400Proof the new line is continuous and on grade

The bottom half of the table is where quotes differ most. A low quote that stops short of the connection, says "permit by owner" and offers "rough grade only" can end up costing more than a higher, complete one. The process guide lists what a complete written quote names.

03 /What does sewer installation cost per metre and per foot?

Per metre, typical new-service trenching quotes $600 to $1,000 shallow and $1,000 to $2,000 deep or under hard surfaces. Per foot, that is roughly $180 to $300 and $300 to $600. Per-metre figures make quotes comparable, but they hide fixed costs: mobilisation, locates, the connection, cleanouts and permits cost about the same on a 6 m run as on a 25 m run, so short runs cost more per metre.

Per-metre and per-foot equivalents (planning ranges)
ConditionPer metrePer foot (approx.)
Shallow, soft surface, good access$600–$1,000$180–$300
Deep (roughly 2.5 m and over) or under hard surfaces$1,000–$2,000$300–$600

Divide each quote's pipe work by its length, and separate the fixed items, before comparing. Sister site SewerQuotes.com has a full treatment of per-foot pricing and quote comparison.

04 /Why does depth change the price so much?

Because depth drives trench safety, and trench safety drives equipment and time. Alberta's OHS Code Part 32 requires walls deeper than 1.5 m to be cut back or supported before workers enter, and protective structures for excavations deeper than 3 m must be engineer-certified. Around Calgary, the frost rule (the City states 4.5 ft of cover over sanitary services) and the depth of basements put most house sewers past 1.5 m at one end. A deeper trench also means more spoil, more backfill, more compaction and more time for the inspector to see a safe, open trench.

Minimum cover over sewer and water services in CalgaryA section through a yard and a driveway. Calgary requires earth cover for frost protection of 4.5 feet, about 1.37 metres, over sanitary sewer services and 8.5 feet, about 2.59 metres, over water services. Frost typically reaches deeper where snow is cleared, such as under a driveway or walkway, than under a snow-covered lawn. The frost lines here are illustrative, not measured. Check your planned depth with the Sewer Depth & Frost Cover Planner, and your grade with the Sewer Slope & Fall Calculator, before contractors visit. Both change what is being priced.

05 /What are the seven cost drivers?

The original site named seven factors that move the number, and they still explain most of the spread between quotes.

Cost drivers for sewer installation
DriverPushes price upKeeps it down
Length of runDeep setbacks, rear-lane connections, suites at the back of the lotShort front-yard runs
Depth of the lineDeep basements, deep connections, shoringModerate depth that still meets cover
Site accessNo machine access, hand digging, tight side yardsOpen access for equipment
Existing pipe materialTransitions off clay, cast iron or fibre, abandoned services to capNew lot with no old pipe
Municipal connectionRoad or boulevard cut, traffic controlStub at the property line
Restoration requiredConcrete, asphalt, pavers, mature landscaping, interior finishesLawn or gravel
UrgencyEmergency work, frozen ground, winter heatingPlanned work from spring to fall

06 /What might a typical installation add up to?

An illustrative example, not a quote: a new 4-inch sewer for an infill house, 16 m from the foundation to a stub at the property line, mostly around 2 m deep, crossing an open lot with sod to restore. It uses the planning ranges above.

Illustrative new-service budget (CAD planning ranges, 2026)
LineBasisPlanning range
Mobilisation and locatesOne setup$500–$2,000
LayoutConfirm stub location and invert$0–$500
Trench and pipe16 m at $600–$1,000 per metre$9,600–$16,000
CleanoutOne at the building$600–$2,500
Permits and inspectionPlumbing permit$150–$2,000
Illustrative subtotalBefore restoration, connection work beyond the stub, and taxabout $10,850–$23,000
RestorationTopsoil and sod sits at the low end of the published rangefrom $500 (range $500–$15,000+)

Two things would change this most: a connection that needs work in the road (up to $15,000 or more on its own), and a route under a driveway, which pushes the trench into the deep or hard-surface rate and adds concrete restoration. That is why the original site refused to quote sight unseen, and why this example is arithmetic, not a price.

07 /How do you compare installation quotes fairly?

  1. Give every contractor the same written scope: route, length, depth, pipe size, connection point, cleanouts and restoration standard.
  2. Ask each to state the design slope, bedding material, test method and who books the inspection.
  3. Separate fixed items from per-metre work, then compare per metre.
  4. Check the bottom lines: connection, permits and restoration. Missing lines are not savings.
  5. Ask what happens and what it costs if they meet rock, groundwater or a damaged connection.

Methods, bedding, testing and cleanouts are explained in how a sewer line is installed, bedding and backfill, inspection and testing and cleanout installation. When your scope is written, request quotes so the desk can route it.

FAQQuestions people ask

How much does it cost to install a new sewer line?

As a 2026 planning estimate, new-service pipe work typically quotes $600 to $1,000 per metre when shallow and $1,000 to $2,000 per metre when deep, plus cleanouts, permits, connection and restoration.

What does sewer line replacement cost in Calgary?

A 15 to 25 m lateral replaced by open cut typically quotes $12,000 to $35,000 CAD as a 2026 planning range, more for deep lines or hard surfaces.

Why do two installation quotes for the same sewer differ so widely?

Mostly because of depth, surface restoration and the municipal connection, and because some quotes leave those lines out.

Is the permit included in a sewer installation quote?

Not always. Ask who holds the permit and whether its fee is in the price; planning ranges run $150 to $2,000 or more.

Does winter make sewer installation more expensive?

Usually. Frozen ground may need thawing, spoil must be kept from freezing, and work goes slower.
